[lauren] turning my oil on so be careful.
[john] hey everyone! it’s hot for food, i’m john .
[lauren] i’m lauren and we’re back with another round of
[lauren] THE CHALLENGE
[lauren] i don’t know i’m just naming it right now but remember?
[lauren] we did the burger challenge
[john] ahh yes.
[lauren] remember? and i won although it was very close
[lauren] because people seem to like your grilled cheese burger
[lauren] but i won by a patty.
[lauren] today we’re gonna do the HOT DOG CHALLENGE
[lauren] cos tomorrow’s national hot dog day!
[lauren] woo woo! we thought, maybe it’s a little similar to the burger challenge,
[lauren] but, who cares? hot dogs are long, hamburgers are round.
[lauren] and we’re gonna pimp out our dogs today and you’re gonna vote
[lauren] to see who made the better hot dog.
[john] vote for mine right away, don’t like,
[john] all of my people were like the stragglers
[john] who were like, when the competition’s over, they were like
[john] “john’s burger!” and it was like, that could’ve helped me
[lauren] yea, i think cos people have been voting recently,
[lauren] which doesn’t count cos it only counts for the week the video is out,
[lauren] we will post every wednesday, so it only counted from wednesday-wednesday
[lauren] anyway, let’s get these dogs on the grill.
[john] we don’t have a grill, but
[lauren] no, we don’t have a grill
[lauren] we have to pan fry them or something
[lauren] but we’re using veggie dogs, obviously.
[john] uhh, do you have a plan yet? i don’t know a plan yet.
[lauren] see this is the trend, why don’t you have a plan?
[john] uhh, because
[lauren] you’ve had a week to plan this,
[lauren] you’ve had a week to think like, what you’re gonna put on your hot dogs.
[john] i think better under pressure.
[lauren] OHHH, because i won the competition,
[lauren] that means i get to throw a, a challenging ingredient at you
[lauren] that you have to incorporate into your recipe.
[lauren] that’s what we agreed to in the last video
[john] i don’t know about that, but
[lauren] we agreed to that in the last video!
[lauren] i’m gonna think of what you need to incorporate
[lauren] but i’m not gonna give it to you until you think of your idea,
[lauren] because that’s not fair.
[lauren] now, yes. veggie dogs look pretty gross.
[john] no, don’t say that
[lauren] but so do regular hot dogs
[john] oh, hot dogs are like, it’s meat casings
[john] kay, what are we gonna cook them in,
[lauren] in the pan.
[lauren] so just so you know, i have some deep fryer oil going on,
[lauren] which i’m using.
[lauren] you better hurry up, we don’t have all day.
[john] okay, okay.
[john] orange pekoe hot dog.
[john] could steep it in tea water.
[lauren] you’re gonna lose already
[lauren] you’re losing right now.
[john] banana hot dog.
[lauren] just thawing some corn.
[lauren] have some jalapeños, have a red pepper.
[lauren] have some deep fryer oil happening.
[john] what are you gonna fry?
[lauren] gonna use this onion.
[lauren] you can’t use a packaged thing!
[john] your parents didn’t let you eat crappy food when you were growing up
[john] did you ever have mac and cheese?
[lauren] yes, i ate kraft dinner all the time.
[john] did you eat kraft dinner with hot dogs?
[lauren] no, because i hated hot dogs.
[lauren] cos they’re disgusting.
[john] well, that’s a thing people did.
[lauren] i know
[john] hot dogs cut up in mac and cheese,
[lauren] so you’re putting mac and cheese on your hot dog
[lauren] that has been done a thousand times!
[lauren] just google mac and cheese hot dog
[john] okay. has it been done in the hot for food kitchen?
[john] when i beat you?
[lauren] it hasn’t been done in the hot for food kitchen,
[lauren] but i don’t know if i agree with
[lauren] all you’re doing is just opening a box of mac and cheese,
[lauren] and sticking it on a hot dog.
[john] you’ve ever heard of the
[lauren] so lazy!
[john] ever heard the expression “work smart, not hard”?
[lauren] i’m not working hard
[john] yes you are.
[lauren] i mean you’re probably gonna win because
[lauren] people like glutonous food, like
[lauren] bacon on hamburgers, on mac and cheese, on pizza
[lauren] and it’s like mac and cheese on hot dog
[lauren] is as excessive as mac and cheese on a pizza
[lauren] which, i don’t know if i agree with mac and cheese on a pizza.
[lauren] even though i have eaten it before.
[john] i’m an adult, i can do whatever i want.
[john] i pay bills.
[lauren] okay, so what i’m doing is crispy onion strings
[lauren] which is actually from our blog,
[lauren] we’ve made them before.
[lauren] so i’ll link to that below.
[lauren] and then i’m doing corn jalapeños relish,
[lauren] victory is mine!
[john] she’s calling hers “crispy onion strings”
[john] those are onion rings, you’re putting onion rings
[lauren] those are called crispy onion strings on our blog, john.
[lauren] get a clue.
[lauren] i just let onion rings soak in non dairy milk with a little bit of apple cider vinegar,
[lauren] and that mimics buttermilk,
[lauren] and you can let that sit for 10-15 minutes,
[lauren] and then, when your fryer oil is all hot and ready,
[lauren] you just take a bunch of onions,
[lauren] then you put them in flour,
[lauren] that i’ve mixed with paprika, garlic powder and a little bit of salt
[lauren] and you coat them, and then you throw them in the fryer oil.
[lauren] and then look at these, crispy onion strings.
[lauren] okay so the trick ingredient you have to include in your mac and cheese
[lauren] is cranberry sauce.
[lauren] because i need to get rid of it,
[lauren] i bought this at christmas thinking we were gonna do something with it,
[lauren] for the christmas recipes,
[lauren] and it’s not getting used up.
[john] are there cranberries in this? or is it just like a puree?
[lauren] well, why don’t you open it up and taste it?
[john] i don’t know what to do.
[john] i know what it tastes like. here’s my three options
[john] i do something with the bun.
[john] not gonna happen.
[john] i could toast the bun with the cranberry.
[john] i stir it in with the mac and cheese and make cranberry mac and cheese,
[john] then it’s gonna ruin the color of mac and cheese,
[john] and make it all red.
[john] i could, cook the hot dog in it.
[john] i was gonna put ketchup on top of the hot dog,
[john] kay i got it, i know what i’m doing.
[john] cranberry ketchup! there’s like sugar in ketchup,
[john] there’s sugar in cranberries,
[lauren] well, i’m done.
[john] just sit back and eat those strings.
[lauren] just kidding. i have to make my corn relish.
[john] i’ll eat mine out of the garbage.
[lauren] so for the corn relish i have half a cup of frozen corn that i thawed,
[lauren] and drained.
[lauren] and then it’s just a quick relish, we’re just gonna add
[lauren] half a cup of chopped pickles,
[lauren] we’re gonna add quarter cup of red pepper, chopped.
[lauren] and i’m gonna make it spicy by adding pickled jalapeños.
[lauren] and i’m gonna add ground pepper,
[lauren] just stir it around,
[lauren] and for good measure, i’m gonna add
[lauren] a tablespoon of pickle juice.
[lauren] and there you go!
[john] i say that we taste how this ketchup turned out.
[lauren] i am curious, actually.
[lauren] this might make you win!
[john] it’s pretty good. it’s inspiring and creativity, it’s what it’s doing.
[john] let’s not speak too soon though.
[lauren] huh. i would say that’s pretty close to a ketchup, if not, a barbeque sauce
[john] time to assemble the mac!
[lauren] are we gonna show this?
[john] in a medium sized bowl, combine your cooked noodles
[john] one packet of cheese sauce,
[john] lightly sprinkle.
[john] over top of the mac and cheese.
[john] four tablespoons of non dairy milk,
[john] two tablespoons of earth balance butter.
[john] this is gonna look so stupid, it’s not even on the stove top.
[lauren] my favorite part about you using mac and cheese for your hot dog is that
[lauren] we actually get to eat mac and cheese.
[lauren] see that’s what i want, i want a hot dog and mac and cheese
[lauren] as two separate things. unk, unk.
[lauren] not, all together mashed in one bite.
[john] i think it’s assembly time!
[lauren] alright, let’s do this.
[lauren] well i feel like they look equally as bad.
[john] they both look equally as bad, but how do they taste?
[lauren] i shouldn’t say they look bad, but you know what
[lauren] a hot dog is a very hard things to make, look nice.
[lauren] cos i think a hot dog’s supposed to be messy
[lauren] like when you go get a street meat,
[lauren] you like, put all the stuff on it, it’s supposed to be messy.
[lauren] you’re like uhhh
[lauren] taste test?
[john] taste test.
[lauren] mine doesn’t work, you’re too tall.
[lauren] this is a good hot dog.
[john] mine tastes,
[john] exactly what you think it’ll taste like.
[lauren] what about the sauce?
[john] you try. the sauce is actually the best part about it.
[john] what do you think?
[lauren] it worked. just eating this doesn’t appeal to me.
[lauren] told you.
[john] your relish was really spicy on it’s own,
[john] but like, the little bit of jalapeños just peeks through.
[john] like right here.
[lauren] i know, mixed with the crunchy,
[john] let me show you where, there.
[lauren] ultimately, doesn’t matter what we think,
[lauren] it’s what you think, so vote with a comment below.
[lauren] do you like lauren’s hot dog, with corn jalapeños relish and crispy onion strings,
[john] or my artisanal, uhh
[john] mac and cheese hot dog, with cranberry ketchup?
[lauren] put that on your next barbecue menu.
[john] the winner of this hot dog challenge,
[john] gets to pick the wild card ingredient that
[john] the uhh, loser has to cook with the following challenge.
[john] so uhh
[lauren] and also, if you have suggestions of what you wanna see us do for the next challenge,
