Hi everyone I’m Wilma Haerkens, I’m your makeover specialist and today is taste testing day with some raw vegan recipes and
I do have a special guest and if you are ever wondering how do raw vegans
stay warm during the winter and

We’re gonna do a soup but a little different this time
And the great thing is is because I’ve been doing this
You know raw vegan so this taste testing that I’m trying to do you know once a month is is the goal
It’s nice that I can try some recipes. Yes. Now last time, I haven’t tried anything
But to be honest, I did try it
at New Year’s so
This is a repeat because I already made the pie
But anyways
the pie, half of it’s gone . Oh my
the soup
we’re doing a
carrot ginger coconut
soup yes, and this is raw and simple
I will leave a link for you at the bottom so you can pick it up. I got this one for Christmas.
I got 5 “un” cook books
this Christmas so they’re not cookbooks they’re not cookbooks
They’re un-cook because raw vegans
All their food is raw obviously and anything that is warmed up will be only warmed up will be only warmed up to 108 degrees
And I’m not a hundred percent there it will be very nice in the summertime well
It’s great in summer because it won’t be so hot yeah so hot’s hot
but a lot of people wonder how raw vegans sort of you know
Keep up with their diets during the winter because you need that
hot food. You know. Yeah comfort food. You know the hot soups and so
We’re gonna do it today and warm it up. Just a little bit
But this is a little bit a little bit of spice in here
Oh is there? yeah. So ginger, ginger is a spice. There’s a little Cayenne in there
Oh is there? Yeah? There’s a little
lime and carrots and
a little avocado
As well, I’ll be make sure that you get all the ingredients
so that you can do it too, and of course you can the book as well. Anyways we’re gonna let this run a little bit, so
Let’s just get this going
See when I had it we didn’t put in the avocado because my friend couldn’t have the avocado I have more than you
Oh there you go. But I have the Vitamix beside me and there’s more in there so
technically I have more than you and
It’s a pretty colour. I like the color. It’s like a
Deep orange, yeah like as almost or maybe more of a vibrant orange, I think
It’s a pretty color, but you can see a little more golden. Yeah, it’s very gorgeous
all right, oh
Should have brought some more pepper
good food doesn’t need spices I
Think they do, I love the spices
I love my pepper though. I did put a bit of pepper, but it could use a little more. Oh it smells nice
Oh yeah
It’s got a little kick to it a little kick touch in the first time I did it it had a major kick to it
Oh, yeah, yeah, oh, it’s the ginger. Oh my my
yes, it’s the ginger
Yeah, I like it mm-hmm if you like ginger

Well in the last soup we have ginger in there, too
I think in the pumpkin. I don’t think we had as much though. No the hummus. Yeah the hummus
We’ll add a link to that. The cayenne just in the back of your mouth
the cayenne, Yeah, just kind of like whoa Wow yeah
It’s just to say it’s there right they think the first time. I made it it was
Yeah
When I made it, I didn’t have the avocado in there at all and you could really taste the carrot
Yeah, I can taste the avocado just because of the creaminess. Yeah like the creaminess of the avocado the carrot
I don’t I don’t you’re not tasting it. Oh let me see
My carrot taste buds are not working today
And that’s I taste the lime, no the carrot is missing I
Just I don’t seem to
taste the carrot I could smell the avocado
Yes
But the carrot for some reason you’re not tasting it no not not um
And carrots not an overwhelming like it’s not it doesn’t overwhelm a dish, anyways. It’s kind of all subtle
Did you try the cilantro? Yeah? No I’m getting there. Sorry. I interrupted you oh
Isn’t that good mm-hmm
So of course the cilantro is from my garden tower mm-hmm, so all I have to do is go and cut it off the tower
It’s just like so fresh like it’s yeah. It’s so much better than than going to buy it at the store
Oh like it has a different taste it has taste
You know like we’re in Canada
By the time we get stuff. It’s tasteless
No, that’s really nice and a lot of the fruits and vegetables there
They’re not ripe when they’re hitting the trucks then getting ripe on the truck so
What kind of carrots did you use?
Orange ones
Now I didn’t use organic ones so I ended up peeling them
Yes You know what? They have purple and yellow ones
I haven’t tried I just tried those no why I ask is because of the taste the flavor of the carrot doesn’t show up as
Strong so I’m wondering if you try to maybe a purple carrot instead of an orange carrot
And we could have but you know what I was thinking of doing and I didn’t do
Mm-hmm was to do it similar to what how I had done it the first time and not put the avocado in there
And how to taste testing and then added an avocado so you could taste the difference. Oh yes, yes
Because I really enjoyed it without the avocado you did yeah, it makes it a little more creamier
You know fluffier but I wonder if you were to just sliver avocados on top as a garnish
Yes, that would be really good too, maybe carrot, kind of nice though that you can do different alternative to just one basic recipe
Yes, just grated some carrots on the top grated carrots yeah actually you could use the pulp I meant to do that too
Mm-hmm as a decoration as well
Yes, you have exactly extra lots of because the carrot is I I mean the soup is great
I really like it, but if it’s a carrot and ginger soup
I’d call it more of a ginger avocado soup
Yeah, because you’re really missing that mind you did call for two cups of carrot juice
And I ran out of carrots, so I had only a cup and a half
And I like I the difference to from the first time that I made this
Because the first time I made it it’s like orange hmm. It’s not like this at all
It’s the green it gives it like that greeny orange color
Yeah
But I like it
Yeah, but it’s kind of nice to have so many alternatives
I think to this you know
it still amazes me that you get all the ingredients all the the
nutrients that you need in your body not that you need I mean but you need yeah without getting the
Like all the food that you stuck in this soup if we were to show it on the table yes, there’s lots
Yeah, let me take a look at that. I need my glasses
Well we could use your eyes instead my nice work
My nice money work. Well – yeah because there’s two cups We’ve gotten to
Carrot juice that I did through a juicer so I juiced I use my juicer
Created your own juice yes a created my own juice and used orange
carrots
So I did you don’t like purple
I never tried them before. I did try them at new years
a quarter teaspoon of cayenne, and I went a little less
Yeah, and ginger I used 2 good thumb sizes Wow the the first time
I think I use three so you can really the ginger was pretty strong ginger is good for you – yeah
it’s super good for you, okay, and then what else we got black pepper and salt to taste and
cilantro for garnish you know nothing major really if you want to look at how many carrots it takes to do two cups of juice
I used a whole bag a two pound bag of carrot to make two cups of juice so
Imagine sitting here and having to eat
Two pound bag of carrot it would be impossible
Exactly. Yeah, this is use me chomping like all afternoon on a on a carrot
yeah, it’s a bit amazed so you’re getting so much more nutrients when you’re juicing especially with the
Markets today a lot of the
Like for carrots and such a lot of the what’s it in them
It’s not like it used to be yes you lose a lot of organic
Yes, what you want to try and use as much organic and non-gmo because there’s so much that is
You know if it takes two pounds to make two cups
Wow yeah, I think it was like two pounds yeah to
pound bag that’s amazing
Hmm and it called for two cups, and I noticed that I had a cup and a half
So we’re gonna carry on eat the rest of our soup before it gets cold
before it gets cold because it’s hot
Actually the the last soup was definitely hotter
Definitely hotter definitely because the avocado would calm it down avocado would do that yeah
And I really enjoyed it, I tell you it kept my body warm for a couple
It’s probably the ginger and the cayenne pepper. Oh yeah, I really noticed the difference. I’m I’m overheating
My face is turned. I swear it is. It’s lasting, you know
I really was feeling the chill before New Years we had that nice cold snap well
But after I was eating the soup for a couple of days much like my body’s warm
And it didn’t just you know it wasn’t while I was just eating it. Then it wasn’t menopausal, and it wasn’t menopausal

Actually, I’ve got you know
One of my clients started she got inspired by what I was doing and she started juicing and her menopause
Went cut down it went away in three days Wow and all she’s doing is just adding juicing
That’s all she’s doing it’s just adding a juice yeah in her morning breakfast
So it’s like your hair the same idea right, but you know the gray hair
I’ll disappear and before you know it you’ll be over on brown hair again
Kind of like being blonde They have more fun they say
we’ll be back in a bit
So we just wanted to talk to you a little bit about the ginger before we we go away again, so
Francine was bringing up a good point so
Because the ginger is pretty strong and I might have used a little bit more than the recipe
I think the recipe called for a teaspoon
teaspoons two teaspoon okay
As I said, I’ll mark it down so that you’ve got it
But I used I juiced my ginger with my carrots and
I am used. Yeah, so when I was juicing my my carrots
I also juiced the ginger so I used organic ginger, so I didn’t bother peeling it, okay
And I just put it in but I put a chunk. Oh I can put two thumb
sizes in there so okay lots of ginger. I love my ginger, and it’s so good for you
Yeah, so that’s why my ginger about being a little bit strong
I didn’t measure
So we’ll see you in a bit unless we have something else to talk about before our next recipe so recipes are guidelines
So recipes are guidelines exactly. I mean absolutely and what you want. Call it what you’d like
Absolutely if you like something a little bit more or less or a change it up well avocado did the recipe call for avocado
It did oh it did original so the first time I couldn’t use it because my friend could not have avocado
Okay, it’s now like the things yeah, I mean I’m surprised. I’m even doing that I used to
My daughters a big by the book cook
Yeah, yeah, I was a non cook like I was not a big cook period. You’re not cooking anymore. I’m still not cooking.
You’re uncooking I’m uncooking yeah you’re mushing, yeah, no juices is better

The cilantro is really good. You know it’s there’s nothing better than having it fresh from that tower garden
you just want to have a little piece of cilantro in
every spoonful every I know it gives it that little zest of a little punch
I love it
The flavors is unbelievable I think that’s really important too right with the ingredients, I think the cilantro
is a key component in this soup without it that’s good. Yeah with it’s Wow well
I couldn’t believe it was like oh, and I’m not a cilantro we ended up
Taking more from the tower garden
So I’ll show you a picture and post a picture there so that you can see but yeah vegetables
In the middle of our winter in Canada mm-hmm. I’ve got leafy greens or herbs growing in my living room. This is like Heaven on earth
it’s all good, so that was good mm-hmm it was very good
Very good where you’re not on TV, but you are on camera
Anyways we need to rate it all we do we forgot to do that. Yes. Oh we can’t forget to rate it
Out of five yeah, I’d give it a four you. You’d give it a four I think um
Why I would give it a four is I don’t taste the carrot okay
Yeah, yeah, that’s not the recipes fault that’s more no but still the cook’s fault
It’s it’s good
It’s creamy it was warm
Yet
Not hot hot
Hot but it was hot
It was hot yeah exactly. Yeah, it was fresh yeah, so we’re not sure whether you’re warming up from your soup or from your reflexology
Think we’re not sure, but it’s warm in here. Yeah, I’m very good
I give it a four just cuz I don’t like giving people a five
Only if it has chocolate, I’m just gonna say yes. Yeah, maybe the next one maybe
I’m gonna give it a five though Oh yes
Yeah, because I’ve tried different versions mm-hm and no by just altering it a little bit how much it’s changed the recipe
So and this one here you like it. I like it. Yeah
yeah, so I’m gonna give it a

put it in the fridge and
Definitely eat it within 12 or 24 hours of the show so that it stays fresh yes

Surprisingly, it’s it’s quick filling. I’m actually surprised because I’m I’m used to eating food like you

This is real
This is as whole and real as you can possibly get
You can get more nutrients you get everything you need you get the enzymes because you’re not heating up
Destroyed so this is as real as it gets but well, but that’s funny because that’s what people will say oh
That’s not filling
yeah, missing real food
Hello no because real real food is overrated and over processed
And overpaid
Yeah, over processed over everything like yeah great so you can tomorrow for breakfast
Just have it as a juice you can actually put it in a smoothie if you wanted, oh yes yeah
That would work the same yeah absolutely
Yeah, so
lots of options yeah Wow
So you don’t know if you don’t want to have the same soup again tomorrow morning or tonight for supper add
Some extra stuff to it, and create something to it. Do you yeah wow nice cool? Yeah?
So we’re back with our dessert, yes, really good and

pecan pie
So that one is from raw cake

So here we go. I don’t know if you can really kind of see it there
We go really really good and your piece is a little bit bigger, but you got
I’m going add a pecan to yours because why because you’ve got kind of you know
You got kind of neglected. You don’t like pecan I do, but you know it’s not like I haven’t had a lot of
pecan pie you ate half of it already. I’ve had you know a lot of maca
Yeah, and it has it because I made an 8 inch
pie I actually cut the recipe in half
Really, yeah, it called for me. Yeah, so maybe well. I was afraid I’d have too much so I cut it in half and
How does this freeze so let’s say I might that’s just it. Yeah, how does it freeze it? We froze it, okay?
This is coming out of the freezer. Oh nice so so the
Flavors have set

Now once again of course obviously I’ve tried this fresh and I’ve also tried it out of the freezer, so

So you’re crust you’ve got pecans you’ve got dates

That’s interesting and maca
So there’s a superfood maca in there
Which is
Give your libido a boost
So Francine was telling me
She’s having this every morning right so yeah, you started and your husband is doing this too no no
You want to tell him to yeah
No, she says yeah, it’s really good for the men as well. Oh. Yeah, oh
Yeah is he having smoothies no
He’s the diabetic is he not yeah
He’s the one that should be eating yes, and it’s usually the ones that should be eating this great stuff. Yes
Yeah, yeah, yeah well, but don’t know what it’s it’s one of the one of those things because you know for me
I made this journey about well July when I bought my juicer mm-hmm, and I just kept going and going and going so
But I think a lot what happens to people as they they hit
plateau not a plateau they just hit something very negative. Oh, yes
Yes, a health crises yeah or something and that’s when you make some
drastic changes in your life where I’m finding. You know – mine is by choice
I’m choosing this an ongoing extreme more extreme than most people would
You know like I said, I’m not a hundred percent raw So what’s inside was filling. Oh, yeah, you were let me finish that
um
Before we get sidetracked again. Well that was it then just a bit of salt
So that was the crust so I was thinking because I find the crust a little I find it just a little too heavy oh
Okay, so I wanted to lighten it up a little bit, so I wanted to change the texture so the recipe called
That you put the crust in a high speed blender and
I
Was thinking no. I want to put this in a food processor and
My intuition to me so it would be a little drier, and not as sticky sticky wet yeah
Yeah, so I wanted to listen to but I didn’t listen to my intuition, but I’d like to do it again I followed the recipe
Yeah, I think this one I could follow the recipe I
Agree with you on the crust
Because we’re so used to having crusts dry and yes, you know a certain way yeah
Yeah, no definitely. I think it’s a nice spin on the crust
It works well, but I think if it was drier and not so yeah just
Like I think you’re a texture
Exactly similar to what we had in there our last one that we did because right now it kind of blends in the filling
In with the filling it’s not a separate. Yeah, item and I think crust and filling should be separate items. Yeah
I agree with you on that. I don’t want to change that one. Yes. Yes you
Know it’s so close. You know it’s like Francine you want to do a taste testing frenzy
sure
And so for the filling we have pecans and we’ve got the dates again
And we’ve got coconut oil and almond milk
and
Maple syrup, I’m sorry. It’s almond milk, but I think I used cashew milk
because I used this for New Year’s and the
person
Couldn’t have almond milk as well. Okay, so I think I used cashew milk in this recipe
maple syrup
which is I think the debatable whether that’s actually raw or not because they heat up the
Maple so no I don’t think it’s raw maple syrup is
Yeah, but
You’ll find a lot of recipes. I think but maple syrup in itself so healthy yeah, so it’s like. I don’t care really
Then the maca power again, so we got lots of maca
We’ve got four tablespoons in this Wow um and I’m wondering if I cut them in half I must’ve yeah
Maybe I didn’t know they could have messed up. You don’t take taste and then cinnamon and salt. I don’t taste the maca powder
okay, Maca powder has a as a
taste I take you in my smoothies every morning right that’s your saying and it changes the flavor of the
Smoothie Yeah, it gives it
Well, it tastes like maca my smooth excuse me my smoothie every morning
You can taste the Maca you can taste it. Okay. It was here
I could taste it because I know what it tastes like but it’s not overpowering so it’s not
Yeah, I know I taste the pecans for sure which have a different flavor like there’s
it’s it’s interesting when you take a nut and you blend it and squish it and
Shred it and put it into something the taste that you get right
It’s so different than from just eating them out of a bowl or something yes
And these were eaten shelled so I actually you know oh you had to my shell my god
Yeah
well, so they’re they’re
Probably as fresh as you can get right. I would think right that’d be hard. Those are those little thin Brown
Football style nuts. They’re kind of yeah, you know you know we have the my Christmastime
mm-hmm yeah
That’s the best way though, it’s when you know you’re trying recipes to
to pick the ingredients that are in season mmm
You know that’s the best way

I’m devouring it you want to take one home for your husband give him a little maca

You won’t know it’ll be in his dessert. I I have read but maca does work, but it takes a while
Mmm to work. It’s not like you take maca, and oh my god
No, I well if it is that I’m doing something wrong
Okay, but didn’t you say you were having like a little increase there
So obviously you know
If it’s helping could be that it could be the fact that we’re empty nesters now mmm, and you’re on holidays
And it’s been the holidays

Very good pie. Excellent I’m quite enjoying it I’ was thinking
you know change the crust a little bit and
Make the filling a little lighter, but what makes it heavy
You know what I mean
Yeah, I’m saying it needs to be lighter so what’s just adding a little bit more like a like a pudding
Mm-hmm less pecans Yeah, or yeah less pecans the best dates yep
And I’m never a bit more of the whatever milk that you’re putting in there
Cashew milk they actually sell cashew milk well you can make your own
hmm
Ah no I’m not using the juicer
What I do is. I use the vitamin the Vitamix is one of those things that
if you’re thinking of a blender to incorporate more raw vegan recipes the Vitamix is definitely
a worthwhile purchase

I’ve had it a lot in the last eight of five days so
Really, there’s really good
Yeah, I’m surprised. Ya know.
Yeah, I’m surprised. It’s that good the desert are like I’m really excited about doing the deserts
They’re always going to be a hint because the sweetness well like
must be the dates
The dates yes, but there’s there’s something sweet something. That’s why I said brown sugar and
Yeah, and when I’m using vanilla
well
We didn’t have vanilla that though did we. I don’t think so
So when I use vanilla for instance
I like to use the bean mmm
So there’s a huge difference once again the ingredients right? Yeah. Yeah, cuz it does taste like brown sugar
Yeah, and there’s no brown sugar. No. I don’t have brown sugar in my house maple syrup and the pecans and
Mm-hmm yep, it’s quite tasty
Yep, I enjoyed it mmm. I should still taste the soup
Should have given me a little more rest for our little tummies
So it was really good, would you like to?

Okay, definitely I’d probably photocopy the recipe take a picture of it and steal it off ya. Yeah

It was good I I could see myself making something like that. It’s I I think it would be a great
The dates would show up with the sugar content in a date knowing it’s high
Oh well I shouldn’t say that so quickly
There’s a lot of dates in it mm-hmm right so and dates are sugar of course well
That’s that’s oh, that’s a great, but it’s not refined sugar so yeah, so it’s a different type
Yeah, somebody healthier dessert I was thinking

No, you and your husband don’t do date night
Maybe they could start something in this year
Now that you’re you know increasing the maca intake
if you want grandchild children make them yourself
